Nautical Miles

The nautical mile is a special unit used primarily in aviation and maritime navigation. Unlike the statute mile, which is based on an arbitrary historical distance, the nautical mile is defined as one minute of arc of latitude along any meridian. This makes it naturally suited to navigation using latitude and longitude coordinates.

One nautical mile equals exactly 1,852 meters, which is about 1.151 statute miles or 6,076 feet. A speed of one nautical mile per hour is called a knot, the standard unit of speed in aviation and maritime contexts. The practical advantage of nautical miles is that distances on navigational charts can be easily measured using the latitude scale printed on the chart's border.

The appropriate unit depends on the scale of what you're measuring. Micrometers are used for microscopic measurements like cell sizes, hair diameter, and semiconductor features. Millimeters and centimeters work well for small everyday objects. Meters are used for room dimensions, human height, and short distances. Kilometers and miles measure road distances and longer travels.
